Answer: Whoopi Goldberg
Goldberg, born on November 13th, 1955 in New York City, was cast as Valerie Owens. Valerie was the head nurse at Claymoore Hospital and she got along well with the patients. She was known to be stern but also compassionate. In her first scenes with Susanne, she showed Susanna around the hospital. Near the end of the movie, Valerie decided to practice some tough love with Susanna, so she picked her up and dumped her in a bathtub. Valerie told Susanna that she had seen many crazy people, over her tenure as a nurse at psychiatric hospitals, but that Susanna was not crazy. Just before Susanna got in a cab to go home, after being released, she hugged Valerie and Valerie reminded her to remember her when she shaved her legs, in reference to an earlier scene in the film. Goldberg starred in the films, "Eddie", "Ghosts of Mississippi", and "Sister Act". In 1991, Goldberg received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film, "Ghost". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress, that year, were Mary McDonnell for "Dances with Wolves", Lorraine Bracco for "Goodfellas", Annette Bening for "The Grifters", and Diane Ladd for "Wild at Heart".
